At South Shore Orthopedics, we see many patients who suffer from hip pain. The underlying cause of hip pain can be unveiled by determining the precise location of the pain. Pain on your groin or the inside of your hip may be the result of issues with the hip joint while hip pain on the outside of your hip, outer buttock, and upper thigh is typically caused by problems with surrounding ligaments, tendons, and muscles. Pain that is around the back of the pelvis is typically from the low back or sacroiliac joints.
Hip pain can also be triggered by conditions and diseases in other parts of your body. It can lead to discomfort in the thighs, groin, or buttocks, resulting in soreness, stiffness, acute pain, and pain during and after activity.
Conditions That Cause Hip Pain
Some of the most common conditions that cause hip pain include:
- Osteoarthritis
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Tendinitis
- Bursitis
- Hip Fracture
- Hip Labral Tear
- Sciatica
- Sacroiliitis
- Dislocation
When to Visit a Doctor
Minor hip pain does not typically warrant a doctor’s visit. However, if your hip pain makes it impossible for you to move your leg or hip, causes unbearable pain, a joint deformity or sudden swelling occurs, or you experience any signs of infection, you should seek medical attention immediately.
How is Hip Pain Treated?
The hip pain experts at South Shore Orthopedics treat most hip pain with non-invasive measures. Anti-inflammatory drugs, analgesics, corticosteroids, or gout medications may be prescribed to alleviate pain and inflammation.
Exercises and stretching to strengthen the muscles that support the hips and improve range of motion can also relieve hip pain and reduce the risk of injuries down the road. Physical therapy may be prescribed. If conservative treatments do not help, surgery may be recommended.
Types of Hip Surgeries:
- Arthroscopy: A minimally invasive surgery that is conducted by making a small incision around your hip and looking inside using a tiny camera and narrow instruments.
- Total Hip Replacement: Total hip replacement is an operation which involves the removal of a damaged hip that is replaced with a prosthesis that is made of plastic, metal, and/or ceramic.
- Osteotomy: Osteotomy is typically performed for individuals with arthritis in a hip joint. It is an extensive surgery in which damaged parts of the hip are removed and the joint is reshaped to improve alignment or correct a deformity. This surgery is typically performed at an academic hospital.
- Bursectomy: Removal of the trochanteric bursa via small opening or two arthroscopic incisions.
